Recycling plastics helps reduce the burden on the environment, but most (91%) plastics are incinerated or dumped in landfills after only one use. The quality of plastic declines each time it is recycled, so it is unlikely that a plastic bottle will be turned into another bottle.Although glass can be recycled and reused, it is not environmentally friendly. Glass is made from non-renewable materials including limestone, silica, soda ash or liquid sand. Limestone mining damages the environment, affects ground and surface water, increases the chance of flooding, alters water quality, and disrupts natural water flow.
Aluminum can be recycled and recycled indefinitely, but a lot of valuable aluminum ends up in landfills where it takes 500 years to decompose. Moreover, the main source of aluminum is bauxite, which is extracted from the process of destroying the environment (including excavating large tracts of land and deforestation), causing dust pollution.
Paper and cardboard are the only packaging materials derived from completely renewable resources. Most of the trees used to make paper are planted and harvested for this purpose. Harvesting trees does not necessarily mean that it is bad for the environment. Trees consume a lot of carbon dioxide, so the more trees are planted and harvested, the more CO2 is consumed and the more oxygen is produced.
Not packaging is right, but it’s harder to do. Trying to buy unpackaged products, biodegradable bags or bring your own bags can be relatively easy eco-friendly little things to do.
